We’re committed to supporting those at the start of their career in Retail and our 12 month eCommerce placements offer a unique insight into the industry due to the variety of areas we cover. You’ll have the opportunity to spend time with each of the teams including Front-End Development, UX Design, UX Research, Digital Marketing, Analytics & Insight and Trading. Each day will bring new and exciting challenges, giving you the opportunity to develop and progress on your placement, and gaining knowledge to help in your future eCommerce career.

The Teams
Our eCommerce department is split into the following teams:
Front-End Development
Within our Front-End Development Team, a typical day will involved utilising your HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills to build the front-end customer experience across all devices for Matalan.co.uk. This development work will be varied, ranging from the development of high-fidelity prototypes, to the creation of A/B Tests in conjunction with our Experimentation Team or the implementation of improvements to our core shopping journey.
UX Research
Your time with the UX Research Team would give you the opportunity to learn about our customer by spending time in our UX Lab. A typical day here would include; providing facilitation in the UX Lab during lab studies, collation and analysis of lab findings as well as start-to-end ownership of mini-research projects.
UX Design
This team is responsible for the design of our end-to-end digital customer experience and focus on creating design solutions to the big pain points our customers feel when trying to shop with us. Working in this area will give you the opportunity to apply your design skills from day one and have a tangible impact on the usability and design of our customer experience.
Digital Marketing
This area is responsible for driving a high-volume of high-quality traffic from all digital channels, including SEO, PPC, Affiliates, Paid Social and Display. Working in this team will teach you a lot about the most cutting-edge Digital Marketing channels, whilst also giving you hands-on experience of running a variety of campaigns.
Analytics & Insight
Staying close to our customer is critically important to us, and this team ensures we do that at all times. Working in this area will expose you to a variety of analytical tools, best practices and ways of working, whilst also showing how we generate the actionable insight we need to inform our decision-making.
Trading
This area is the main link between eCommerce and the product we sell to our customers. Working closely with our Buying & Merchandising Teams you will get a fantastic opportunity to curate our product offer online, including how to utilise data to trade our product offering across a variety of categories.
If you’re successful, you’ll be assigned to one of these areas based on your preference and chosen degree subject.

What we are looking for
To find the best people for our eCommerce team, we’re looking for an individual who is currently a 2nd year student, ideally studying a fashion or computer related course that requires you to complete a 12 month placement starting July 2024.
We need someone who is keen to learn and be part of a successful business that is growing both online and in-store. You'll have an enriching and enjoyable year as part of a fast-paced and dynamic team that is still growing, making it the perfect time to be here!
We’d like somebody who has a base level of theoretical and practical knowledge in the area(s) they’d like to work in. Although we’re not expecting you to be able to come in and perform like a seasoned veteran, we still want you to be able to make a difference and enjoy your time here.
Outside of your technical skills, you will also need to be a good communicator and be able to function well as part of a team, whilst also being able to manage multiple tasks in parallel and manage your time well.
