About Newcastle University

Newcastle University is a Global Top 125 university (QS World University Rankings 2023) and a founder member of the Russell Group.

We can trace our origins back to the School of Medicine and Surgery, established in 1834. Today, we have a global reach, connected to and networking with strategic partners, research institutions, industry collaborators and employers around the world.

Awarded 5+ QS Stars for Excellence 2022, we are a global leader of sustainable development – ranked 1st in the UK and 8th in the world in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2022.

Research excellence

With strengths in ageing and health, cities and place, data, one planet, culture and the creative arts, our research has global impact.

Results from the most recent Research Excellent Framework (2021) demonstrated that the University’s research power has grown by 65% since 2014. 42% of our research was scored as world-leading, and research income increased from £93m to £109m.

We have one of the largest European Union research portfolios in the UK. We host three National Innovation Centres in ageing, rural enterprises and data, and are a University Partner in The Alan Turing Institute – the UK’s leading Institute for data science and AI research.
