Job description

BAE Systems do offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements, however it is expected on our Summer Intern Programme you will be required to attend your site 3-4 days per week. Please note, this may be subject to change in line with the needs of the business. The hybrid working arrangements including which days you are required to work on site/remotely will be outlined by your line manager.

What you will be doing

Do you want to work on the largest warship ever in service with the Royal Navy, or a warship which has been upgraded and is considered one of the most advanced in the world? As an Undergraduate , you will work work at the heart of our business, ensuring complex and safety-critical products are safe and fit for purpose. Working at all stages of the product lifecycle, from identifying and evaluating hazards, to developing robust controls and safety procedures, you’ll play a pivotal role in development, production and testing, as well as helping us to develop comprehensive safety management systems for entire platforms.

As a Product Safety Engineer you will be working in a team containing some of the country’s foremost experts in the field of Safety Engineering and working on one of the most complex and high profile Safety Cases in the United Kingdom. Working within Warship Support you will gain insight into the most advanced UK Warship ever developed and understanding of the systems within the ships you’ve heard and seen about on TV. The training and experience you will gain will be invaluable and accelerate real progression; you will work on incredible projects with experienced engineers and Royal Navy personnel

Specific activities could include:

A Product Safety Engineer can expect to be involved in activities regarding Safety Case architecture as well as detailed Safety Inspection of the engineering design using tools such as Hazard Identification, Fault Tree Analysis, Functional Hazard Analysis, Event Tree Analysis and many others.

The role of a Safety Engineer requires a unique mind-set in which the question to be answered is not how does it work, but how does it fail. To do this you will acquire an in depth understanding of the engineering design. This is a role which requires relentless effort in which subjective questions must be answered with a compelling argument supported by a body of evidence. Questions such as how can this piece of equipment or function fail, what would happen if it were to fail, what would be the consequence of its failure, how often will it fail, what safety measures are in place in the event of its failure, how often will the failure result in an accident, what is the risk associated with this failure, is the risk acceptable, has the risk been reduced to As Low As Reasonably Practicable.

What we are looking for

As a minimum requirement you`ll need to be on course for achieving a 2:2 in a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Disciplines, Safety Engineering, Environmental or Physics.

To be considered for this role you must be returning to University to complete your degree.
