About the programme

Babcock provides vital naval engineering support to the Ministry of Defence. Join us and you’ll work on ground-breaking maritime projects that help to keep the world safe.

During the programme, you'll have the opportunity to specialise in Commissioning Engineering disciplines such as commissioning mechanical equipment and systems, commissioning electrical and electronic systems, commissioning instrumentation and control systems, and commissioning refrigeration systems.

You'll get hands-on experience working on real shipbuilding projects at Rosyth Dockyard. Projects could include the Type 31 frigate design and build, Type 31 export opportunities, Queen Elizabeth Class carrier maintenance periods, commercial refit and upgrade projects, and future naval programmes. You’ll also develop specialist skills including:

  • Commissioning mechanical, electrical and instrumentation systems
  • Utilising safety management systems
  • Equipment testing and verification
  • Fault diagnosis and troubleshooting
  • Continuous improvement.

You'll gain valuable knowledge and understanding from your involvement in live design and construction contracts currently underway. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the experience to take on a Test Technician role.

What you’ll need

  • HNC in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Highers in Maths and another technical subject, preferably Physics, at grade B or above, supplemented with a level of vocational training.

Training

You'll study for your SCQF Level 6 apprenticeship in Commissioning Engineering through an accredited Modern Apprenticeship programme at Fife College. This covers all the theory to support your hands-on learning.
