Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Graduate Programme

Job description

Metallurgy and Materials Engineering is integral to the Royal Navy’s fleet of submarines and warships.

Over the course of two years, you will experience first-hand the breadth of activities required to support these vessels, working on complex, high-integrity engineering systems. You will investigate new technologies to make these activities more efficient and effective.

Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at Babcock

Working in a discipline with such fundamental importance to platform integrity means that you will experience all parts of a vessel’s lifecycle – assessment of design, development of weld procedures, non-destructive and destructive testing, engineering critical assessment, and failure mode investigations.

In the process, you may work with 3D laser/optical scanning for corrosion mapping. There may be opportunity to learn about automatic welding processes involving mechanised and robotic systems, electron microscopy and x-ray analysis of microstructures and fractures, computer tomography with digital radiography, and remotely operated inspections for nuclear systems.

In addition to this, there may be chance to work with catapult companies and university research enterprises. You will work alongside experienced metallurgists to gain hands on experience in a fast paced and fluid working environment to build on your academic qualifications.

What you'll get

We will provide you with a supportive and engaging environment where you can grow your career. In addition:

  • Minimum 25 days holiday entitlements + bank holidays + agile working* subject to conversation with your manager
  • Generous pension and employee share schemes
  • Flexible benefits, including cycle to work scheme, discounts
  • Employee assistance programme supporting physical, mental and financial wellbeing
  • You’ll also have the chance to get involved in our STEM outreach and volunteering activities, which our graduates find incredibly rewarding in all sorts of other ways.

Your career development

It’s hard to beat the variety of fantastic opportunities and business experiences you’ll receive. You can expect real world encounters and exposure to exciting projects that will really help you navigate where you want to take your career.

Plus, when you join us, you’ll be automatically enrolled onto our Graduate Development Programme. Through a series of digital and face to face sessions, presented by wellbeing and performance experts and our external partner Gen Healthy Minds, we will equip you with the knowledge and tools you need to thrive and perform at your very best on your programme and beyond.
