Industrial Operations: Manufacturing Undergraduate Programme - Halewood

Job description

Your placement year at university could not have come at a more exciting time.

An undergraduate scheme at JLR is specifically designed to prepare you for a successful, long-term career with us. Surrounded by an innovative and dedicated team of industry experts, you’ll apply your learning and satisfy your curiosity for what’s possible.

Arrive curious. Discover opportunity.

Industrial Operations: Manufacturing

Manufacturing is at the heart of our Industrial Operations function, which incorporates our manufacturing, procurement and supply chain teams and consolidates accountability for the production of our vehicles.

Manufacturing is central to JLR, with thousands of vehicles being created every day across our production facilities. You will have the opportunity to influence the future of manufacturing. This industry-leading scheme is aimed at undergraduates who have a passion for learning and a pioneering mindset: ambitious, innovative and determined individuals, who respect our heritage and can think beyond the challenges of today, to build the cars of tomorrow. Whilst gaining wide-ranging hands-on experience and pursuing your ongoing studies, you will work on projects that are fundamental to our global success. During your journey to become an expert in manufacturing, you will learn how to effectively implement and manage a lean operation and interpret the digital engineering lifecycle of a vehicle, whilst developing exceptional core competencies in engineering.

During the programme, you could work at our Halewood Plant or within our Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME) function based at Halewood. You will be allocated to a department based on personal preferences and business needs.

Halewood Plant

The Halewood vehicle production facility has a strong manufacturing heritage: in fact, we are extremely proud to have achieved our 60th year of manufacturing in 2023. What’s more, Halewood is home to the award-winning Evoque and the Discovery Sport and is now destined to become our first fully electric vehicle manufacturing facility.

This is an exciting time for us, with unprecedented levels of investment and the introduction of new technologies, and we’re putting our people at the forefront of our plans. Our focus on cultural development, will empower our teams and give them all the skills to succeed in a diverse and inclusive environment, powered by the unique ‘Halewood’ spirit.

Whether you focus on Press, Body, Paint, Trim and Final Launch or Materials, Planning and Logistics (MPL), you will experience the end-to-end production of our vehicles. This is an exciting time to join Halewood, as we develop the new generation of electric cars, which will be delivered in 2025. This landmark launch will bring together diverse technologies to release our innovative Electrical Modular Architecture (EMA) platform – and you can play your part in making it happen.

Utilising a range of toolsets and benefiting from extensive on-the-job training, you will learn all about problem-solving and applying data analysis techniques, giving you all the skills you need for a fast-moving manufacturing career. You will also learn about lean manufacturing operations and the engineering lifecycle of a vehicle, whilst developing your core competencies in engineering.

Global Manufacturing Engineering (GME)

Our GME function is responsible for the design, installation and commissioning of manufacturing facilities and processes to build the modern luxury vehicles of the future. Join us and it will be your responsibility to ensure that our manufacturing plant teams have the facilities they need to deliver vehicles in the right quantities and to the highest quality standards.

This diverse team spans a broad spectrum of disciplines across a range of technology areas such as:

  • Process and industrial engineering plans and implement processes to deliver the required volume from our plants.
  • Dimensional systems engineering ensures that vehicle designs and features meet customers’ expectations, including reporting on body quality progress.
  • Facilities engineering is responsible for making certain that parts are delivered to production lines on time and to agreed quality standards.
  • Vehicle Configuration Acceptance Testing (VCAT) evaluates both software and electrical systems before delivery.

Along the way, you will learn problem-solving skills and gain expertise in project management and data analytics.

Rewards and benefits

Our 2024 undergraduate programme salary will be £21,377. You’ll also enjoy a generous holiday allowance, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, an excellent pension scheme and access to a wide range of deals and discounts from retailers and sports clubs.

You will be applying your curiosity and creativity every day as you begin to hone your skills for a successful, impactful career. You own your development, and only you can make it happen. We’ll be right by your side in your pursuit of exceptional, and we’ll give you all the encouragement and support you need.

What we are looking for

You will need to be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline (not including biology or life sciences).

We are particularly interested in hearing from mechanical engineering and industrial manufacturing engineering undergraduates but will also consider aeronautical and automotive engineering students if you have a strong interest in manufacturing.

In addition, you will have real passion for problem-solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.

Please note that our undergraduate placement opportunities are open only to penultimate-year students (those who will be returning to their final year of study or on an integrated master’s after their placement with us).
