Product Engineering: Software Undergraduate - West Midlands

Job description

Your placement year at university could not have come at a more exciting time.

An undergraduate scheme at JLR is specifically designed to prepare you for a successful, long-term career with us. Surrounded by an innovative and dedicated team of industry experts, you’ll apply your learning and satisfy your curiosity for what’s possible.

Arrive curious. Discover opportunity.

Software Engineering

Our future-focused vehicles incorporate some of the most advanced technology in everyday use on the planet, utilising software that is essential in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), infotainment and new electric propulsion. That puts our software engineers at the heart of innovating world-class products, and at the forefront of moving automotive design forward.

As a successful undergraduate in this area of engineering, you will work alongside seasoned engineers who will guide and support your growth as you become an experienced member of the software engineering community.

During your placement, you’ll work within one of our software teams to deliver best quality, reliable features that delight customers – gaining valuable insight into robust design and implementation and advanced validation techniques or developing tools and processes to support the work of our engineering teams.

During the Software Undergraduate Programme, you could work in one of the following departments: Engineering Body Chassis (EBC), Engineering Operations (EO), Engineering Propulsion (EP), Digital Product Platform (DPP) or Engineering Research (ER). You will be allocated to a department based on personal preferences and business needs.

Engineering Body Chassis (EBC)

Body Engineering is responsible for most of the content that you see and touch in the car. We work closely with the creative studio to translate award-winning designs into engineering reality, taking into account performance, manufacturability, sustainability, cost and weight.

Each area is multidisciplinary, looking after things like geometry creation using Computer Aided Design (CAD), performance robustness using Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), material selection, complex electro-mechanical interfaces and software. We work with all departments across JLR (procurement, design, manufacturing, etc) as well as maintaining relationships with international suppliers. Our impact can clearly be seen in both current vehicles and the features and products we will make available to customers over the next 10 years.

From day one, you will be part of a team and will be personally responsible for developing real-world engineering solutions. Along the way, you will learn tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise engineering solutions that will enrich your capabilities, raise your profile and accelerate your development as an engineer.

Engineering Operations (EO)

At the heart of JLR Engineering, EO underpins technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes and specialist technical services to deliver our world-class products.

A diverse team, EO harnesses a variety of skillsets from; project management, information management, data analytics and to building and testing prototypes. EO is fundamentally involved at every state of the engineering process and is driving an exciting transformation in the way we engineer and deliver our products with class-leading technology and quality.

During your undergraduate placement, you could work as a software engineer, software developer, data engineer or engineering delivery lead and will become confident in using coding languages such as C#, C++. MVC, MS SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MATLAB, React and Python.

Engineering Propulsion (EP)

Our EP team are leaders in the design, testing, validation and certification of world-class propulsion systems aimed at delivering driving experiences that our customers will love for life.

The scope of our propulsion systems is far-reaching and includes major commodity groups such as electric drive units, energy storage devices, engines, transmissions and drivelines, complemented by software system integration, calibration and control strategies.

We take a global perspective, and our teams carry out overseas testing and certification in world markets, gather market-specific feedback, interface with colleagues and supplier manufacturing plants around the globe, and collaborate cross-functionally with all our key stakeholders.

To make all this happen, we use state-of-the-art build, test and sign-off facilities to provide the power and driving force behind our vehicles – applying the combined expertise of our cross-functional teams to find the ideal balance between performance, sustainability and refinement, while responding to the rapidly changing environmental issues that shape our industry.

Digital Product Platform (DPP)

Software is a key component of our cars as the technology in a vehicle continues to increase rapidly to provide the features and functions our customer’s demand. As a software engineer within JLR, you'll be key to ensuring our future vehicles have high-quality, reliable features that delight drivers. This could be through robust design and implementation, advanced validation techniques or providing tools and processes to enable our engineering teams to work better. In particular, you will undertake low-level software development to ensure our in-vehicle computer systems provide the very best performance, using boot charts, balancing processor core loading and refining fast-boot processes.

Engineering Research (ER)

We’re putting software engineers in the driving seat, where they can steer evolving technology in all areas of our business. You could find yourself involved in anything from products including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), connected services, infotainment and electric propulsion to services such as the dealership experience, repair and warranty through to process and efficiency improvement spanning product design, testing and validation.

ER is an exciting department to work in. We are looking into the future and trying to map what will be happening in the world as we identify unmet customer needs and evaluate the technology landscape to deliver innovative products and services using cutting-edge technologies including advanced software engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, cyber security, augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) and more.

Rewards and benefits

Our 2024 undergraduate programme salary will be £21,377. You’ll also enjoy a generous holiday allowance, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, an excellent pension scheme and access to a wide range of deals and discounts from retailers and sports clubs.

You will be applying your curiosity and creativity every day as you begin to hone your skills for a successful, impactful career. You own your development, and only you can make it happen. We’ll be right by your side in your pursuit of exceptional, and we’ll give you all the encouragement and support you need.

What we are looking for

You will need to be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in software engineering, computer science, cyber engineering or a related discipline.

In addition, you will have real passion for problem-solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.

Please note that our undergraduate placement opportunities are open only to penultimate-year students (those who will be returning to their final year of study or on an integrated master’s after their placement with us).
