Product Engineering: Electronics and Complex Integration Systems Undergraduate

Job description

Your placement year at university could not have come at a more exciting time.

An undergraduate scheme at JLR is specifically designed to prepare you for a successful, long-term career with us. Surrounded by an innovative and dedicated team of industry experts, you’ll apply your learning and satisfy your curiosity for what’s possible.

Arrive curious. Discover opportunity.

Electronics & Complex Integration Systems

Automotive systems are increasing in complexity and becoming highly distributed across the vehicle platform. Electronics systems and their components are the driving force behind our cutting-edge customer-facing features, from assisted and automated driving to the quality-of-life improvements our drivers expect when using their vehicles.

During the Electronics & Complex Integration Undergraduate Programme, you could work in one of the following departments: Engineering Body Chassis (EBC), Engineering Operations (EO), Engineering Propulsion (EP) or Digital Product Platform (DPP). You will be allocated to a department based on personal preferences and business needs.

Engineering Body Chassis (EBC)

The EBC department is responsible for most of what you see and touch in our cars. We work closely with the creative studios to translate award-winning concepts into engineering reality, factoring in performance, manufacturability, sustainability, cost and weight. Our remit spans lids, doors, structures, cabin and safety, cockpit, climate, seats, exteriors, lighting, glazing and roofs.

From day one, you will be part of a team and will be personally responsible for developing real-world engineering solutions. You will learn tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise engineering innovations that will enrich your capabilities, raise your profile and accelerate your development as an engineer. This will involve working on new products and enhancing current products from the basic science all the way through to the customer’s hands.

Engineering Operations (EO)

EO underpins technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes plus specialist technical services to deliver our world-class products. A diverse team, EO harnesses a variety of skillsets, from project management, information management and data analytics to building and testing prototypes. EO is fundamentally involved at every state of the engineering process and is driving an exciting transformation in the way we engineer and deliver our products with class-leading technology and quality.

You could find yourself working as a systems simulation engineer, rigs test engineer or climatic test engineer. Every role will give you an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience of future technology on business-critical projects that will support us to exceed our customers’ expectations.

Engineering Propulsion (EP)

Our EP teams are responsible for designing and developing complex systems and their components to provide experiences that our customers will love for life. As a successful undergraduate in this area of engineering, you will work closely with a team of engineers who will guide and support your growth as you become an experienced member of the electronics engineering community.

Within Electronic and Complex Systems Engineering, you will enjoy the opportunity to use cutting-edge tools and practices to follow our systems engineering process. Utilising model-based techniques to support the design and early validation of the system, plus proven electronic design practices, you will support the provision of premium features and the consistent quality that our customers expect from JLR brands.

Digital Product Platform (DPP)

Software is a key component of our future cars as the amount of technology in vehicles continues to increase to meet our customers’ evolving needs.

Our DPP team uses iterative and concurrent engineering approaches to deliver real innovation, harnessing a wealth of techniques, including model-based software development and directly writing code. You could be involved in creating this code or providing support and guidance to our suppliers to ensure we provide robust products and satisfying user experiences. In the process, you could find yourself implementing elastic cloud-based infrastructures, utilising infrastructure as code and deploying a variety of scripting languages that will create the tools and environment for large software teams.

Alternatively, you could undertake low-level software development to ensure our in-vehicle computer systems provide the best balance of performance, using boot charts, balancing processor core loading and refining fast-boot processes.

Rewards and benefits

Our 2024 undergraduate programme salary will be £21,377. You’ll also enjoy a generous holiday allowance, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, an excellent pension scheme and access to a wide range of deals and discounts from retailers and sports clubs.

You will be applying your curiosity and creativity every day as you begin to hone your skills for a successful, impactful career. You own your development, and only you can make it happen. We’ll be right by your side in your pursuit of exceptional, and we’ll give you all the encouragement and support you need.

What we are looking for

You will need to be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in systems engineering, electronic and communications engineering, computer science, software engineering, cryptography, maths or physics.

In addition, you will have real passion for problem-solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.

Please note that our undergraduate placement opportunities are open only to penultimate-year students (those who will be returning to their final year of study or on an integrated master’s after their placement with us).
