Product Engineering: Hardware and Mechatronics Undergraduate

Job description

Your placement year at university could not have come at a more exciting time.

An undergraduate scheme at JLR is specifically designed to prepare you for a successful, long-term career with us. Surrounded by an innovative and dedicated team of industry experts, you’ll apply your learning and satisfy your curiosity for what’s possible.

Arrive curious. Discover opportunity.

Hardware & Mechatronics

Hardware and Mechatronics is at the heart of all JLR vehicles and fundamental to how we address evolving engineering challenges. Our vehicle dynamics and off-road capability really sets us apart, but we also focus on noise vibration harshness, door systems, headlamps, glazing and seats, with a remit spanning mechanical design, integration and systems engineering.

Our mission is to deliver outstanding customer experiences. This is supported by the creative and innovative skills of our people as well as the range of tools and processes we use. Failure mode and effect analysis are fundamental to providing safety-critical, high-performing and high-quality systems for our customers. Throughout the design and verification process, you will utilise both Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) toolsets to deliver the engineering specifications, with world-class system engineering tools to assist you in designing electromechanical control systems.

During the Hardware & Mechatronics Undergraduate Programme, you could work in one of the following departments: Engineering Body Chassis (EBC), Engineering Vehicle (EV), Engineering Operations (EO), Engineering Research (ER), Engineering Propulsion (EP), Vehicle Programmes or Business Excellence. You will be allocated to a department based on personal preferences and business needs.

Engineering Body Chassis (EBC)

The EBC department is responsible for most of what you see and touch in our cars. We work closely with the creative studios to translate award-winning concepts into engineering reality, factoring in performance, manufacturability, sustainability, cost and weight. Our remit spans lids, doors, structures, cabin and safety, cockpit, climate, seats, exteriors, lighting, glazing and roofs.

From day one, you will be part of a team and will be personally responsible for developing real-world engineering solutions. You will learn tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise engineering solutions that will enrich your capability, raise your profile and accelerate your development as an engineer. This will involve working on new products and enhancing current products from the basic science all the way through to the customer’s hands.

Engineering Vehicle (EV)

EV is the key technical department for the product creation process: leading engineering innovation from concept to customers, managing the technical content of programmes, and balancing customer attributes and commodities to deliver and launch world class products.

In particular, EV drives the creation and control of vehicle architectures, conducts diverse technical projects and concept studies, and champions end-to-end vehicle efficiency improvements, whilst integrating systems to ensure the seamless delivery of futureproofed cars.

Engineering Operations (EO)

EO underpins technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes, plus specialist technical services to deliver our world-class products. A diverse team, EO harness a variety of skillsets, from project management, information management and data analytics to building and testing prototypes. EO are fundamentally involved at every state of the engineering process and are driving an exciting transformation in the way we engineer and deliver our products with class-leading technology and quality.

You could find yourself working as a prototype rotating machine installation engineer or power electronics testing engineer. Whatever your role, you will enjoy an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience of future technologies on business-critical projects supporting us to exceed our customers’ expectations.

Engineering Research (ER)

We research, explore and develop technical solutions and innovations that will address the future needs, challenges and expectations of the world, our company and our customers. In short, we want to enable JLR’s transition to sustainable, modern luxury through advancing new technology and innovation that creates value.

The ER team is based at the University of Warwick campus within the National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC). We have access to amazing collaborative spaces, a large engineering hall, multiple laboratories and workshops that help us create proof of concepts, prove our theories and the technologies we are exploring, and their scalability for automotive application.

Engineering Propulsion (EP)

Internal combustion engines have dominated automotive propulsion since cars were introduced but we are reimagining the future. While continuing to refine the quality of our engines through to their end of life, we are rapidly expanding and delivering electrified projects, which are catering to demand today and tomorrow.

Our EP teams are responsible for designing and developing world-class powerpacks, which include engines, transmissions, battery packs and electric drive units. In addition to the air path and thermal systems which provide the driving force behind our vehicles, we design a broad array of electronic and software components.

Vehicle Programmes (VP)

Our mission is to integrate the enterprise to deliver commercially successful products on time and to quality standards, which fulfil our brand and customer promise throughout their lifecycles.

As such, we work with all areas across JLR to realise our product programmes, so roles with VP offer wide-ranging exposure to the business.

VP offers a truly cross-functional experience, through product strategy to programme management, business performance, cross-carline and commodity strategy, and programme purchasing.

Rewards and benefits

Our 2024 undergraduate programme salary will be £21,377. You’ll also enjoy a generous holiday allowance, a discounted car purchase and lease scheme for you and your family, an excellent pension scheme and access to a wide range of deals and discounts from retailers and sports clubs.

You will be applying your curiosity and creativity every day as you begin to hone your skills for a successful, impactful career. You own your development, and only you can make it happen. We’ll be right by your side in your pursuit of exceptional, and we’ll give you all the encouragement and support you need.

What we are looking for

You will need to be on track to achieve at least a 2.2 degree in mechanical, electronic, software, chemical, aeronautical, automotive, materials, environmental or aerospace engineering, computer science, mechatronics, maths or physics.

In addition, you will have a real passion for problem-solving and the curiosity to understand business challenges and deliver innovative solutions. You will also have strong numerical and interpersonal skills and the confidence to champion new initiatives.

Please note that our undergraduate placement opportunities are open only to penultimate-year students (those who will be returning to their final year of study or on an integrated master’s after their placement with us).
